FAQ's

Do Cleto Reyes Gloves come with a warranty?

Cleto Reyes boxing gloves have a 60-day manufacturer’s warranty in Europe and the UK.

What boxing gloves should beginners use?

It is a good idea to ask your trainer about the gloves he/she would recommend for you. Many Amateur and Professional boxers use Cleto Reyes Sparring gloves.

Contest gloves are not for training use. They are not as hard-wearing as sparring or training gloves. Sometimes professionals use them for training, but this is more of a personal choice.

There are two types of Cleto Reyes Sparring gloves, lace and wrap-around.

If you are training alone, then you may prefer to use the Velcro wrap-around gloves, as they are easy to put on and take off.

If you have a personal trainer, then you may prefer lace-up gloves which is what many of the professional and elite amateur boxers use.

Universal boxing gloves look like a sparring glove but have more support in the knuckle and wrist and use a ‘harder wearing’ leather. They are for pad work and punch bag use. So if you are using boxing training as a lifestyle training program, these are perfect.

The 3rd consideration regardless of whichever gloves you use is the weight of the glove.

There are several things to consider:

1) Your size, weight, height and age.

2) What your trainer recommends.

3) What type of boxing or training are you doing.

Many people like to wear a heavy glove 12oz14oz16oz or, 18oz because it increases fatigue and makes the boxer work harder to keep their hands up for defence. Also, the added weight slows the punch whilst the extra padding reduces the chances of injury to the hands. When the boxer then puts on lighter contest gloves, the hands feel lighter and faster.

How long do Cleto Reyes boxing gloves last?

There are many considerations: cost, amount of use and how they are maintained and looked after. If you pay very little for your boxing gloves, they will not last long.

If you buy a premium pair of gloves like handmade Cleto Reyes Boxing Gloves, potentially if kept well, they will last for many years.

Some advice for premium handmade Cleto Reyes gloves:

  1. Never dry them with a hairdryer. Dry the gloves naturally in a dry aired room.
  2. Wipe after use with a damp cloth (not wet), then use a dry cloth.
  3. Never wash the gloves either by hand or with a machine; this will ruin them.
  4. Do not use a leather conditioner on the gloves.
  5. When storing the boxing gloves, keep them away from strong direct sunlight.

If you look after the gloves, you will reduce the chances of the leather getting brittle or the tanned leather losing its properties.

Are training gloves the same as Sparring gloves?

Cleto Reyes makes a glove called the universal, which can be used in sparring but are for bag and pad work.

Sparring gloves are for sparring use only, but many people do use them on the bags and pads, which may affect the longevity of the gloves.

Cleto Reyes also make bags gloves; these are solely for bag use. They are not for sparring or pad work.

There are two styles of wrap-around and traditional with elastic cuff.

There is also a Cleto Reyes grappling glove, designed for MMA training.

Remember to wear hand wraps once you have been boxing at least 3 or 4 times because you will be punching harder and will need to protect your hands.

Can you use Sparring gloves on the heavy bag?

Yes, you can, but the gloves are not for use on a heavy bag so it may reduce the lifespan of the gloves.

Do I choose Lace or Velcro gloves?

Historically all fighters used to use lace-up boxing gloves. Worldwide it is very much used as a part of the ritual of the trainer instructing the boxer whilst lacing up the gloves before a fight. However, It is a personal choice, but Professionals and Elite amateurs tend to use lace-up, but there is no rule on this.

If you are training on your own then wrap around gloves are better, as you will struggle to lace up one of the gloves and could lead to injuries.
