Tis the Season to be Jolly

Tis the Season to be Jolly

It’s possible to maintain healthy habits during the festive season.  What if you don’t want to undo your health progress, but still want to enjoy yourself?  Here are my 12 healthy habits to support your long term goals throughout the festive season:

  1. Eat nuts.  Nuts are packed with protein and fibre
  2. Drink water.  Set reminder alarms on your phone.  Carry a water bottle.
  3. Pack in protein at every meal to keep you fuller for longer.
  4. Start with salad before every main.  Better still, eat with vinaigrette (apple cider vinegar and olive oil).
  5. Be alcohol aware– check out the ‘ABV’ on wine bottles, swap in low alcohol beers, use more mixers, alternate with glasses of water, drink alongside food.
  6. Pamper yourself – choose 3 non-food/booze ways of feeling festive
  7. Save the sugar for last - veggies and protein first.  Protein and fibre slow down sugar absorption and fill you up.
  8. Add beans/pulses, reduce starchy carbs (spuds, rice, pasta)
  9. Eat at least two portions of different veggies with every main to keep you fuller for longer (Brussels sprouts and red cabbage are really good for you!)
  10. Choose cheese over cheesecake – it’s harder to overeat.
  11. Be picky with your treats – yes to chocolate if that’s your thing – but maybe a limited number of your favourites, making each one count.
  12. Love yourself, both for today AND tomorrow….
